The Sacred Eyes: Jagannath’s Gaze

Material : Base Canvas

• A cotton canvas (pre-stretched or cloth-mounted) is used.

• If raw, the canvas is primed with:

  • A mixture of chalk powder (sankha churna)

  • Boiled tamarind seed gum

• The surface is allowed to dry and is rubbed smooth using a polishing stone, creating the ideal texture for fine brushwork.

2. Sacred Pigments (for the Eyes and Aura)

• Deep Black (Eye Outline & Pupils): Made from lamp soot collected from clarified butter (ghee) lamps, associated with purity.

• White (Eye Whites & Halo Details): Created from finely powdered conch shells, representing peace and divinity.

• Crimson Red (Divine Energy Surroundings): Extracted from hingula, symbolizing vitality and devotion.

• Indigo Blue (Spiritual Depth): Derived from indigo plant extract, representing Lord Jagannath’s cosmic form.

• Yellow/Gold (Sacred Halo or Background Detailing): From haritala or turmeric, used to denote enlightenment.

• All pigments are mixed with natural tamarind seed gum to maintain adhesion and traditional consistency.

3. Brushes

• Handmade brushes using fine mongoose or squirrel hair, fixed on bamboo sticks.

• Special attention is given to brush control for the eyes, as they require perfect circular precision and emotive depth.

4. Symbolic Enhancements (Optional)

• A halo of miniature symbols like the chakra, lotus, or conch may surround the eyes using micro-detail techniques.

• The canvas may be bordered with Jagannath Patta patterns in repeating floral or wave motifs.

5. Finishing Coating

• A natural layer of resin or shellac is brushed over the painting to protect it from dust and fading while providing a subtle gloss.
