1. Canvas Preparation

• Base Canvas: Hand-stretched cotton cloth

• Surface Primer:

  • Chalk powder (sankha churna) for smoothness

  • Boiled tamarind seed gum as a natural binder

• The primed canvas is air-dried and polished with a stone or seashell for a glossy, even surface suitable for fine detailing.

2. Natural Pigments (for Devotional Imagery)

• Jet Black (for Lord Jagannath’s divine form): From lamp soot collected from burning ghee or oil lamps

• White (Aura, ornaments, eyes): Made from finely ground conch shell powder, symbolizing purity

• Crimson Red (Divine aura, devotee clothing): Derived from hingula (natural cinnabar)

• Yellow and Golden Tones (Spiritual glow, jewelry): Sourced from haritala or organic turmeric

• Indigo Blue (Devotional sky, Lord’s background): Extracted from indigo leaves

• Green (Earth and garlands): Made from leaf extracts (neem, tulsi, or spinach)

All pigments are mixed with tamarind seed gum paste to bind them naturally to the canvas and ensure longevity.

3. Brushes

• Made using fine hair from squirrel or mongoose, tied to thin bamboo sticks

• Used for:

  • Micro-line work (eyes, fingers, sacred symbols)

  • Detailed borders (floral and geometric designs)

  • Subtle shading (spiritual glow, background patterns)

4. Symbolic Details & Borders

• Borders often contain lotus vines, chakra symbols, and sacred patterns representing protection and devotion

• The composition centers Lord Jagannath in divine stillness, contrasted with the humble devotion of the seeker

5. Finishing Coat

• A final layer of natural lacquer (resin or shellac) is applied to:

  • Protect the artwork from dust and moisture

  • Provide a gentle sheen that enhances colors and symbolic depth
